For overachievers like you and me, it’s easy to conflate your career with your sense of self worth. I know you know what I’m talking about…
It starts innocently enough with benign questions of self awareness — a healthy exercise in itself: Am I on the right path? Am I doing the right thing in my career?
But for Type A folks, that process quickly leads to doubt: Am I being the best I can be in my job? Is this dumb job itself the best I can do? Could I be doing more/better?
And that leads to an erosion of self confidence: Ugh, I could be doing more. Look at those people over there. They’re accomplishing amazing things. I’m not achieving anything near those feats. I should be doing more…but I’m not. What’s wrong with me?
Nothing. Nothing is wrong with you.
Your job is just your job. It has nothing to do with your value as a person. I’m here to tell you that you are incredible, no matter what you do for a living! I don’t care what those people over there are doing. And you shouldn’t either.
